Tolerance: The willingness to accept or tolerate somebody/something especially opinions or behaviour that you may not agree with, or people who are not like you.
Tolerate: To accept somebody/something that is annoying, unpleasant, etc. without complaining. To allow somebody to do something you do not agree with or like.
They always say we have to tolerate people of other races and religion to strive for a harmonious multi-racial nation. Tolerance isn’t enough. By merely tolerating another’s religious practices or culture, we’re only smiling and nodding our heads at our neighbour who burns dragon jossticks, saying, “It’s okay. I don’t mind”, but mentally cursing him for doing so. Or feeling extremely disgruntled by the fajr azan, but not expressing it.
We need more – something deeper than plain tolerance. And we don’t need politicians who stir up racial dissension.
